Leitrim County Council has received funding to appoint a full-time heritage officer.
The position has been vacant for many years because of financial constraints, with a person acting in a part-time capacity.
However, at the local authority’s annual budget meeting today, an extra €28,000 was allocated for heritage and conservation services in 2018 compared to this year.
Temporary chief executive Joseph Gilhooly says the council will start the process of appointing a full-time heritage officer immediately, but it will take a few months.
Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Bohan is welcoming the news.
