Farmers in Leitrim could lose out on thousands of euro in summer payments under the walks scheme this year.
That's according to Sinn Fein councillor Brendan Barry who says that 120 places in the county were approved last December and 42 farmers are eligible to get payments.
The issue is that the appointment of a Rural Recreational Officer who would deal with paperwork and submitting applications for farmers has not yet been made due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
The average payment for farmers to work at maintaining the walks is just over €1,000 per year.
Councillor Barry says he hopes that that Leitrim Development Company can get an extension on the process so that an officer can be recruited and farmers can get their payments.
