Leitrim County Council paid out over €19,000 to undertakers in the last two years.
In total eight undertakers received payments for services provided last year in the county.
County Councils can employ undertakers for a variety of services – including so-called pauper’s funerals where they can pay for the cost of s funeral and burial when a person dies with no surviving relatives.
Undertakers are also asked to attend the scene of fatal road crashes or at incidents of sudden death.
In Leitrim in 2017, the Council paid out a total of €8,542 to five undertakers – with Padraig Burke billing the Council for the largest amount of €4,950. and Seamus Feehily claiming €2,100.
Last year the Council’s undertaker costs increased to €10,730 – spread across eight funeral directors – with Padraig Burke again receiving the largest payment of the €4,050 and Michael McGowan claiming €1,350 and Joey Smith €1,200.
