Leitrim County Council appeals to public to stay safe in local waterways and lakes

With the rise in temperatures this week, Leitrim County Council is appealing to anyone using the waterways to be careful and to use best safety practice.

Easing of Covid-19 restrictions in recent days has meant that people are now allowed to swim in groups of four as long as social distancing measures are adhered to, and anglers can also use rivers or lakes within 5 kilometres of where they live.

Other sports that people may be involved in on the waterways include paddle boarding and kayaking and Leitrim Water Safety Officer Declan Boyle says it’s important to let people know where you’re going and when you’ll be due back.

He says parents should be very careful with young children anywhere near water if they’re walking beside it, and while water temperatures are still quite low, anyone who does go into the water needs to stay close to the shore…
