A Leitrim Councillor has described the Department of Agriculture as acting “in bad faith” as a new mapping program is rolled out in the Shannonside region.
Concern has been expressed by dozens of landowners in Leitrim and Longford after the Department’s forestry section informed landowners of a new Land Parcel Identification System.
The new mapping scheme is the building block for farmers to draw down payments from schemes such as Basic Payment and the GLAS.
However, Councillor Des Guckian fears that under the new system, some landowners who planted forestry could lose out on grants of between 20 and 600 euro per year as their lands are redrawn and entitlements reduced.
He feels that any change to the contracts that landowners would have signed when planting began cannot be altered now:
