A Leitrim councillor is urging the Government to fund a local suicide prevention group which provided 800 hours of counselling last year.
North West Stop which covers seven counties including Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon relies solely on donations and fundraising.
The organisation responds to families in crisis within 48 hours and 80pc of the money it raises is spent on counselling and therapy services.
Leitrim County Councillors supported a motion at their meeting this week to ask the Minister for Health, the HSE and the National Office for Suicide Prevention about funding regional rather than national groups.
Sinn Fein councillor Padraig Fallon who proposed the motion says North West Stop which is run by volunteers deserves state funding.
