A Leitrim company is intending to create a biomass hub on the Cavan/Leitrim border and to develop a biomass group of suppliers in preparation for increased demand in the coming years.
McMorrow Harvesting which was established in 2002 was recently successful in securing grant aid under the Leader fund to help in buying a mobile wood chipper which will produce wood chip from timber which is not suitable for normal processing, and tree trimmings.
The company says it believes it will take around two years to set up the new wood chip business and they also intend partnering with other local suppliers, including one based in Mohill, to form a group which will guarantee supply of the biomass product in the future.
Gerry McMorrow says the customers for this product are not there in large numbers at present, but they expect demand to grow substantially in the next few years.
He says this is because businesses will be availing of a special support scheme run by the Sustainable Energy Authority which encourages them to move over from fossil fuels to alternative forms of heating.
