The Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council is calling on Failte Ireland to retain and expand the Lakelands brand for marketing the region.
In its Tourism Strategy from 2017-2022, the local authority highlights that over 144,000 people visited Leitrim in the last 4 years; 70,000 were domestic tourists, 35,000 came from across the border and 55,000 were overseas visitors.
The sector generated 34 million for the local economy and supports 1,200 direct and spin off jobs.
The local authority has set an ambitious target of doubling visitor numbers to 300,000 in the next five years, through the development of the Shannon Blueway, the Lakelands, the Greenways, angling, walking and adventure activities, as a food destination and night life in its towns.
Chief Executive Frank Curran told today’s Let’s Talk that while they are playing their part, Fáilte Ireland has a key role to play also.
