All animal collection services serving the Shannonside region have closed their doors from today.
The Animal Collectors’ Association have taken the action to close until further notice due to a collapse of talks with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
The group says that the operators have been in financial trouble for the last number of years and it’s no longer financially viable to be running a knackery.
They say they are losing money on every animal they are collecting at the moment and despite representations made to the department, their concerns are getting pushed down the line.
Collection services in the region include Mc Guinness in Moistrim, Greene’s of Ahascragh and O Rourke’s which serve county Leitrim.
Josephine Rogers is with Midlands Animal Collections in Scramgoue, and she says the disparity between the funding they receive from the Department and rising costs is making business unviable.
