The organiser of the annual Jamestown Show in Co. Leitrim has spoken of her sadness after spiraling insurance costs forced its’ closure.
The event, which has been running continuously for the past 54 years, will not take place as is tradition this year on the last Saturday in July..
Mary McDermott, who has been the secretary of the show for more than 30 years, says people in the area are both sad and disappointed at its’ discontinuation.
The popular event, which originally began solely as an agricultural show, had widened into a focal point for the community and included family entertainment such a dog show and crafts.
But following a meeting in March on risk assessment which highlighted the range of safety issues which had to be covered, it was decided to bring the event to an end.
