The head of the Irish Hotels Federation says the Shannonside region would lose out hugely if the government goes ahead with plans to increase the VAT rate for the hospitality sector.
Joe Dolan, the Managing Director of the Bush Hotel in Carrick on Shannon claims that jobs could be under threat if the government decides to increase the rate from 9 percent to 13.5.
Earlier today Social Justice Ireland called for the special VAT rate for the hospitality sector to be scrapped which they claim would provide an extra 190 million euro for the government to spend.
A recent IHF survey has found a large increase in the number of domestic holiday makers, especially in this region.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show Joe Dolan claimed the low VAT rate is helping with the increase in ‘staycationers’ and removing it would be a disastrous blow to this region:
