Fifty-one per cent of Leitrim households will have access to high-speed broadband by the end of 2018.
Shane Tiernan, an acting director of services with Leitrim County Council, with responsibility for broadband, says at present about 10,000 of the county’s 22,000 premises have access to the fibre network.
This will rise by at least 1,000 by the end of next year, while the remaining 11,000 premises are set to be connected by 2022, as part of the National Broadband Plan.
However, Mr Tiernan says many of those homes already have high-speed internet access through wireless services, such as Sky.
He says significant progress is being made in Leitrim despite it being so rural.
