UPDATE: Scene of Shannon Key West Hotel fire sealed off by Gardai

Gardai have sealed off the area around the Shannon Key West Hotel tonight as investigations get underway into the cause of a fire at the hotel earlier this evening

Emergency services remain at the scene after a blaze was reported inside the hotel shortly before 8pm.

Fire brigades from the local area attended the scene and the blaze was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported.

At this stage it’s believed the fire began inside the premises and Carrick-on-Shannon Superintendent Kevin English has now arrived at the scene.

Phelim O’Neill , who is a member of Paradub, a group who have been locked in a legal battle to purchase the hotel, has now arrived at the scene.

In November the hotel was earmarked as a centre for accommodating asylum seekers by the government, and a legal row developed over the ownership of the property.

An announcement made just before Christmas that a deal had been agreed between Paradub and the hotel owner for the sale of the vacant property to Paradub but in recent weeks it was feared the hotel may still be used by the government to accommodate refugees.
