Fears for local marts after closure of Mountrath

A Leitrim councillor is expressing concern about the future of rural marts in this region after the closure of Mountrath mart last week.

The Co Laois mart closed suddenly last Wednesday with a statement says it was decided by the co-op committee that due to spiralling costs, trading was no longer viable.

The statement concluded that the price of insurance had risen four times in the last four years, with €2000 spent per week in overheads before any trading could commence.

Fianna Fail councillor Paddy O’ Rourke says while the price of cattle can recover and give the marts more money, but there’s no such forecast for insurance costs and other marts could find themselves in similar positions to Mountrath.
