Concern that new environmental scheme will badly affect Leitrim

A Leitrim county councillor says he’s concerned about the number of people who are likely to be successful in applying to take part in the new pilot Zero Discharge Scheme.

The environmental scheme has been developed by Leitrim county council over recent years as a means of trying to overcome the high failure test for housing applicants due to the poor quality of soil in many parts of the county.

While the council was optimistic of a large percentage of applicants being successful, this week’s meeting of the local authority heard that some changes had been made at a national level about design guidelines that may mean some projects won’t qualify.

Councillor Padraig Fallon who had asked for an update on the scheme said he was disappointed to hear that national changes might affect the Leitrim solution.
