Aughavas post office’s fate to be determined in three weeks

An Post will decide within the next three weeks whether to permanently close the post office in Aughavas.

Three officials from the semi-state company met a delegation from the community in the south Leitrim village yesterday, as part of their public consultation process.

They are considering ceasing post office services in Aughavas because McCaffrey’s bar and grocery shop, where it’s based, has been sold and the postmistress is resigning.

The local delegation told An Post yesterday that it’s a valued asset in the area and, speaking to Shannonside FM afterwards, local Sinn Fein TD Martin Kenny was upbeat.

Angus Laverty, the public affairs manager with An Post, also attended the meeting.

He says the post office will remain open until its long-term future is decided.
