Alcohol group slams local TDs’ opposition to Bill

Alcohol Action Ireland is criticising statements made by Sligo-Leitrim TDs Eamon Scanlon and Tony McLoughlin on the Public Health Alcohol Bill last week.

Deputy McLoughlin had described advertising restrictions in the bill as ‘crazy’ and said they could decimate the growing whiskey-tourism sector in the region.

The Fine Gael TDs claimed the proposed legislation could put the future of a major distillery project in Sligo in jeopardy, as well as affecting an existing project in Drumshanbo.

Eunan McKinney, from Alcohol Action Ireland, says they are very disappointed the TDs didn’t make any reference to the huge harm that alcohol causes in this country when they were making their contributions in the Dail.

He said he would have liked to see the TDs express more concern about alcohol abuse.
