Agriculture Minister defends controversial remarks on Leitrim forestry

The Minister for Agriculture is defending remarks he made last week about forestry, particularly when it comes to Leitrim.

Michael Creed was asking farmers last week to consider planting more forestry in order to help meet the country’s climate targets, and his comments angered some Leitrim residents and farmers.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show today, Michael Creed says he understands that Leitrim already has more than its fair share of planting, and he wants farmers in other counties to consider planting trees an an investment.

The Agriculture Minister says while forestry now has a bad name in Leitrim and some other areas, he believes farmers must think of it on a more practical level of investment.
