Aghacashel post office in Co Leitrim will close later today, marking the end of almost a century and a half of such service in the local area.
While the post office section will close, the family has said it intends to keep the shop open.
Aghacashel is just one of up to 10 rural post offices in the Shannonside region set to close in the coming months under a redundancy deal offered by An Post to the smaller services across the country.
Cloonagh post office in north Longford will close on the 12th of October, while Athleague post office in Roscommon will close its doors on the 31st of that month.
There’s no closure date yet for Carrickboy post office in Longford or Newtowngore and Killargue in Leitrim. although all the people running those services have indicated they may be taking the redundancy package.
It’s also not known when exactly the Knockvicar, Granlahan, or Loughglynn post offices in Roscommon may close, but they are all due to have their minds made up before the end of January next year.
Sinn Fein councillor Brendan Barry says the closure of Aghacashel post office today will bring a long tradition to an end, and the Lee family similar to others around the country had been let down by successive governments as services were directed away from them.
