748 horses euthanised locally between 2012 and 2106

Figures released by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine reveal that 748 horses have been euthanised within the Shannonside Region between 2012 and 2016.

The numbers, which were released under the Control of Horses Act, showed that 1024 horses were seized over the five year period with Roscommon having the highest number of horses euthanised with 262. Westmeath had 258 horses euthanised while Leitrim had 94 and Longford had 34.

The number peaked in 2014 when a total of 288 were euthanised, however the figure has dwindled since then, with no horses being euthanised in Roscommon in 2016 and just two in Longford.
