Over 400 Shannonside children waiting for autism assessment

Over 400 children in the wider Shannonside region are waiting over three months for an autism spectrum disorder assessment.

These assessments allows kids to be diagnosed with a disability, and apply for the care they need.

The HSE is supposed to have them finished within six months of an application, but 3,256 are at least three months overdue.


According to information supplied through Freedom of Information, ore than 4,600 ‘assessment of need’ applications for children with disabilities are overdue completion.

In CHO 1, that covers Donegal, Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan and Cavan/Monaghan, 45 children are waiting longer than three months and total of 79 appointments are overdue.

In CHO 2, that covers Galway, Roscommon and Mayo, a total of 72 appointments  are overdue and in CHO area 8, which covers Laois/Offaly, Longford/Westmeath, Louth and Meath, 652 appointments are overdue.
