The first spring salmon of 2018 has been caught in recent days on the River Drowse, Co Leitrim.
The fish was landed on Tuesday, January 30, by well-known local angler Bill Likely.
The salmon, which weighed 7½lb, was taken from the Meadow Pool on the river, which is close to Leitrim’s only piece of coastline in northwest.
Water levels on the river were high at the time but have decreased in recent days.
The first fish, as is tradition, will be prepared for a tasting event to benefit local charities and this year the beneficiary will be North West Hospice.
Milton Mathews, Inland Fisheries’ director for the north western river basin district, says they are delighted to have the accolade of ‘first salmon back’ in the region again.
He says he hopes it will kick start the beginning of a busy season.
