One hundred and 26 children across the Shannonside region were taken into care in a single year because of serious risks to their safety.
Twelve admissions were due to physical or sexual abuse while 34 children were removed from their homes due to neglect.
The figures, which are the most recent available from the Child and Family Agency Tusla, cover the twelve months to December 2017.
The statistics show that 50 children were taken from their familes in the Midlands, 44 in Galway/Roscommon and 32 in Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan.
Leitrim Independent Councillor Des Guckian says that it’s “very, very sad” to see children in these situations but in cases of physical or sexual abuse the quicker children are removed the better.
