The Bishop of Meath says yesterday’s publication of the Mother and Baby homes report casts a necessary light into a painful episode in our social history.
The report covers two institutions in the Meath Diocese, one in Castlepollard in north Westmeath, and the other in Dunboyne in Co Meath.
Bishop Deenihan says in too many cases the experience of those in institutions managed by religious congregations, and State funded, is a cause of shock and shame.
He adds that like many others he is saddened and shamed by the report.
The Bishop says he welcomes wholeheartedly the proposal by government to help people who are trying to establish contact after having bene adopted from the homes.
He also acknowledges though that many who gave birth in the homes want to leave the past behind them.
