Local taxi drivers are being urged to be careful in taking fares involving the pickup and delivery of bank cards.
It follows a warning from local Gardaí regarding a surge in texts scams targeting the public.
In this scam, the victim receives a message claiming to be from AIB about a problem with their bank card, and after following a link, has their account information harvested.
According to gardaí in Longford and Roscommon, the victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from the bank telling them their card is cancelled and a new one will be issued.
The scammers then order the card handed over to an unsuspecting taxi driver who has been sent to the victim, with that card subsequently delivered to the criminal where it can be used.
