Homeowners are being advised to use their house alarms.

Gardai in Longford are investigating a series of thefts and robberies from homes in recent days.

Householders are being reminded of a number of simple tips to protect their property a with darker evenings ahead for the winter.

Detectives in Longford are seeking the public's help following a series of incidents reported at houses across County Longford since the start of October.

The first incident was reported in Ardagh on the 4th of the month when two men reportedly gained entry to a home and ransacked the property just before 11am.Gardai are also looking to establish any links between a series of incidents which occurred between Thursday night last and Friday evening. Investigations are underway into an attempted burglary in the Butterfield area of Longford town when the householders reported the glass in kitchen door and then saw a man fleeing over a wall at the scene.

In the Ballinalee area, also last Friday, a householder returned to find their home had been entered overnight and ransacked but nothing was taken. Just after 9pm on Friday night, another householder in the Edgeworthstown area reported that when they returned to their home, their rear door was damaged and home had been ransacked with alcohol and jewellery taken.

Gardaí are also examining another incident in the Aughnacliffe area where a vacant property was broken into in the last number of weeks and copper pipe and a cylinder had been taken.

Gardai are issuing advice for householders including to turn on lights using timer switches and to always use house alarms, even if leaving the house for a short period of time, and Locking all windows and doors and avoid allowing strangers/bogus callers into your home.]
