Abortion referendum expected next year

A referendum on abortion looks set to take place next year.

The Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald and the Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar are among the Government ministers saying the vote should happen in 2018.

It follows an overwhelming vote by the Citizens Assembly in favour of replacing the Eighth Amendment.

An all-party Oireachtas committee will be established shortly to consider the Assembly’s report, and the next steps.

Louise O’Reilly of Sinn Fein believes much of the ground work has already been done by the Citizens’ Assembly.
