Your ideal travel companion to explore County Longford! The ‘Explore Longford’ App was developed by Longford Local Authorities, in association with Longford Tourism and the Midlands Regional Authority. The App provides a whole new visitor experience to the county, allowing users to discover and explore hidden gems using their smartphone, and share their own unique perspectives through the in-app camera function. The Explore Longford app is available for download for both Apple iOS and Android devices.
Central to ‘Explore Longford’ are descriptions of almost fifty heritage sites throughout the county. Each attraction has a short written and audio introduction to the site and its history, which will greatly-enhance the user experience. Sites include monastic foundations, churches, estate houses and other notable buildings. The App also has a photograph of each of the sites. In addition, it has a directory of the towns and villages in the county, with a brief overview of each one, with particular emphasis given to the county’s three award-winning villages; Abbeyshrule, Ardagh and Newtowncashel. There is a section on genealogy for those interested in tracing their roots, including a listing of the all cemeteries in Co. Longford. For those interested in Celtic heritage, a section on ‘Language, Legend and Mythology’ recounts legendary tales that partly took place in the county, including The Wooing of Etain and the Táin Bó Cuailgne. A section on the Irish language also helps to demystify placenames and help with pronunciation. The App also provides the visitor with a guide to upcoming festivals and events in the county, this information is provided and updated by the Longford Tourism Office, groups organising events may advise the Tourism Office of their event on (043) 334 2577 for inclusion on the App.
The App is available on the Android Store or Apple App store.
