Almost 100 homeless people in Longford have been assisted by the Midlands Simon Community in the last 18 months.
The Minister for Housing is today launching the results of a pilot Housing program run by the homeless charity across four counties including Longford which recorded an 85 per cent success rates in taking people off the streets, and helping them remain in homes.
Recent government figures showed 8,000 homeless people in Ireland at present, with the majority located in Dublin.
Tony O’Riordan, CEO of the Midlands Simon Community says people in the Shannonside region may not be aware of the extent of the homeless problem as there is few obvious incidents of rough sleepers.
