The Longford minor footballers won the Leinster Minor Football Championship today at Croke Park with a stunning six point victory over Offaly as the Blue and Gold ran out winners by 0-14 to 0-08 to win their first title since the 2002 final triumph over Meath.
Offaly may have beaten Longford by twenty-two points in their first round encounter and recorded impressive wins over Meath and Laois enroute to the final, but Longford rejuvenated their campaign with back door victories over Carlow and Wexford before recording magnificent wins over Westmeath and Kildare in the quarter-final and semi-final, and this final was never going to produce another one sided encounter.
Longford trailed by a point at the interval with scores from Robbie Smith (twice), Padraig McCormick and Declan Mimnagh helping Longford to four points against the Faithful County's five points.
Longford completely dominated the second half with four more points from Smith, two from Barry McKeon, McCormick's second point of the game, and a point each from James McGivney,Darren Farrelly, and Diarmuid Cooney, whereas Offaly only registered four points.
A famous victory was capped by the presentation of the trophy to the Longford Captain, Dylan Quinn by vice chairperson of the Leinster Council, Longford man, Martin Skelly.
Longford now face the runners-up of the Connacht Minor Football Championship in the All Ireland Quarter-final.
