Saturday, July the 3rd, was a historic day for The Longford hurlers as they won their first ever All Ireland Senior Hurling title at Croke Park when they defeated Donegal by 1-20 to 1-12 in the Lory Meagher Cup Final.
By the tenth minute, Longford led by four points to one and had a one man advantage after Donegal captain Colm Breathnach was sent-off for a second bookable offence following fouls on Garett Ghee after just twenty seconds, and then Joe O'Brien in the sixth minute.
Six points from Ghee helped Longford establish a five point interval lead as they led by 12 points to 7.
Donegal did come back to within a point courtesy of a Paddy Hannigan goal, but the pivotol moment arrived when Kevin Campbell's floated effort over Longford keeper Paddy Cullen came back off the crossbar, and within sixty seconds the ball was in the back of the Donegal net, courtesy of a twenty-five yard strike from Ghee, who finished top scorer with one goal and nine points
