Athlone Town AFC say they reject the ‘outrageous findings’ made by an independent disciplinary committee which has seen two of their players banned from all football activities for a year.
Igors Labuts and Dragos Sfrijan have been charged with three rule breaches around match manipulation, betting and bringing the game into disrepute.
Athlone say they’re ‘disappointed’ but ‘not surprised’ by the ‘perverse’ findings which they claim ‘fly in the face of the evidence presented’.
The club are supporting both players in their appeal and welcomed an earlier statement from the PFAI saying they’re willing to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The PFAI statement claimed that ‘no player in the history of sport’ have been ‘found guilty of match fixing on such little evidence’.
