Tributes Paid to the Late Frank Murphy

The death has occurred of the former Irish Olympian Frank Murphy.  Mr Murphy passed away yesterday following a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

It’s understood that Murphy was fighting the disease for years and passed away in a Dublin nursing home on Thursday.

Murphy enjoyed a sterling career on the track hew won a silver medal (1,500m) at the 1969 European Championships and in the process set a new Irish record.

Murphy went on to win another silver medal at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Vienna.

He also represented Ireland in the finals of the 1968 Olympic final in Mexico in 1968 and four years later when he represented his country in Munich.  On the domestic front he won successive National Mile titles in 1966 and 1967.  The Clonliffe Harriers Club man was inducted into the Athletics Ireland hall of fame in 2014.
