Tony Keady was ‘a big man for the big occasion’

It’s Galway versus Waterford in the All Ireland hurling final this Sunday and in the lead up to the final one of hurling’s greatest ever players Tony Keady who passed away last month is being fondly remembered.

Shannonside FM pundit and former Roscommon and Westmeath manager Seamus Qualter has been in conversation with Shannonside Northern Sounds John Lynch about the hurler of the year. He described Tony as ‘one of the great characters of the game’. Seamus spoke about how Tony loved the big days in hurling ‘he was a big man for the big day’

Seamus talked fondly of the Galway team that Tony was a part of and the last Galway team to win an All Ireland. ‘They would train seven days a week’

Tony Keady was once banned for playing in America in what became known as the Keady affair and Seamus remarked that a tg4 documentary once asked Tony what he’d like written on his gravestone and he jokingly remarked ‘I should’ve played in 89’
