The newly redeveloped surface at Doctor Hyde Park was treated to a pulsating encounter this afternoon between Roscommon and Donegal in Division one of the Allianz football league with the visitors coming away with a victory by 0-16 to 2-09. Eoin McHugh kicking the winning score late into the game.
with four minutes to go Donegal looked to be on course for victory when Conor Devanney scored a cracking goal for Roscommon to level matters and there was drama in the closing moments when Ronan Stack struck a goal bound effort that was brilliantly saved by the Goalkeeper and then up the field they went to leave Roscommon one of eight teams in the country with no points after two games and in a battle against relegation.
Amazingly only three frees were scored in the game with 2-22 coming from play. Kevin McStays side were wind assisted in the first half and led at halftime by 1-07 to 0-07. Ciaran Murtagh nabbing their goal. Donegal however outscored them in the second half by 0-09 t0 1-02.
Heres commentatory as heard on Shannonside FM of Ronan Stacks chance and Eoin McHughs point as described by Willie Hegarty and Frankie Dolan.
The Roscommon manager Kevin McStay spoke with Shannonside FM’s Willie Hegarty after the match and he said that ‘we were brave and bold but no points and when you don’t take your chances in the big moment’s there’s always a chance you’ll get caught and that’s what happened’.
‘A lot of players we introduced played well and they put in a huge effort that spurred us on but we must work on our accuracy and work on improving it’.
