The line-up for the quarter-finals of the FAI Junior Cup were confirmed following the completion of last weekend’s seventh round fixtures. The good news for the Shannonside region is that Boyle Celtic have advanced to the business end of the competition and will be in the mix with some of the top teams in the Country when the draw will be made next week.
Boyle Celtic created history last weekend and secured their passage to the last 8 of the tournament for the first time. The North Roscommon side defeated VEC FC from Tenure by two goals to nil.
They had the perfect start with Niall Brennan scoring in the 7th minute as their manager Darren Hurd deployed a 4-3-2-1 formation.
The north Roscommon side then switched to a 4-4-2 formation in the second half and VEC pushed on in the last twenty minutes in search of that vital goal. But it was Boyle who scored again in injury time when man of the match Battles was fouled in the box and Luka Roddy converted the spot kick.
Elsewhere last weekend the defending champions Sheriff YC played 80 minutes with nine men and required a penalty shoot-out to see off Villa FC at the Clontarf All-Weather, as penalty specialist Lee Murphy came off the bench to save one and score the winning spot-kick.
The champions from nine years ago, Carrick United also advanced thanks to a 3-1 away victory over Limerick’s Regional United, while Evergreen are the only other past winners still in with a chance of winning this year’s competition thanks to a 2-0 win at home to Willow Park.
The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on the 15th of February, with full details to be confirmed by the FAI.
The teams that will be in the bowl for next Wednesday are as follows:
