Difficult Waterford test for The Town

Longford Town will continue on with their first division campaign this evening with another potentially difficult assignment when they welcome league leaders Waterford FC to The City Calling Stadium.

The game will kick off at 7.30 and will present another massive to a Longford side that have been struggling with injuries and inconsistency in their performances so far this season.

Waterford are many people’s favourites to secure promotion from the first division this season, the Munster side have built a strong team both on and off the field with Pat Fenlon now the Club’s general manager and Alan Reynolds the first team manager.  Reynolds is no stranger to the Longford Town Faithful after playing for the club in the past.

Longford go into this game with Waterford lying in 7th place in the first division table, the midlands side are just above the other team that was relegated from the Premier Division last season, Wexford Youths.  It would be fair to say that Longford and Wexford have so far struggled to adopt to the demands of the First Division.

Last week Longford were defeated 2-0 by UCD, and another major cause of concern is their dismal home record.

From their opening five matches Longford have won one, drawn one and lost three so far.  In manager Alan Mathews they have one of the best in the game and given time he is likely to turn things around.  It’s also fair to say that Longford’s chances of success have been hampered with injuries.  Gavin Boyne and Keelan Dillon were the latest players to join that list last weekend and as a result Mathews is struggling for fit bodies to select for the showdown with highflying Waterford.

Waterford have assembled a very strong squad for 2017, a quick look at their resources would suggest a team capable of competing in the Premier Division. Longford Town will face a massive challenge later this evening and now may the time that they need to turn around their fortunes at home.
