Leitrim GAA chairman vows to fine clubs €1,000 for ref abuse

At Monday night’s Leitrim GAA convention, county board chairman Terence Boyle vowed to get tough on clubs whose players abuse referees in 2018.

In a forceful address in the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon, he said there’s a major problem with a shortage of referees in the county and claimed it wouldn’t be long before matches were cancelled due to none being available.

He slammed the abuse refs endure week in, week out and noted how, in other sports, they were treated with much more respect.

Boyle told our reporter Eoghan Murphy that he’d seek to introduce fines of up to €1,000 for these episodes in the new year.
