Cracking Semi-finals in prospect for Leitrim senior football championship

Three of the semi-finalists are now known for the Connacht Gold Leitrim senior football championship.

The defending Champions Aughawillan, could face a huge local derby in the semi-finals with a possible meeting in store with neighbours and fierce rivals Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s.  Tommy McCormack’s side will first of all have to overcome Glencar/Manorhamilton in their quarter-final replay.  The sides finished level on Saturday evening in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s kept up their one hundred per cent record in the championship with a comfortable win over St Patrick’s Dromahair.  The intermediate champions from 2016 are all the time gathering momentum and will relish the opportunity to complete back to back senior and intermediate championship titles in successive years.

Mohill will take on St. Mary’s Kiltoghert in the other semi-final.  The 2015 winners were seriously tested by Drumreilly in their quarter final on Saturday evening in Cloone, before a Ronan Kennedy goal sent them on their way.  St Mary’s required a late gaol from Alan Doherty to secure their place in the business end of the competition.  The Carrick-on-Shannon outfit defeated Melvin Gales in Mohill yesterday.

St Mary’s semi-final against Mohill will bring memories of the county final between the same two sides eleven years ago.  St Mary’s have been gathering momentum throughout the championship and they will present Mohill with a serious challenge.

In the Fox Monumentals Intermediate Championship, Fenagh St. Caillin’s and Leitrim Gaels must meet again after a thrilling encounter in Ballinamore last night. The eventual winners will face Drumkeerin in the semi-finals.

David Casey’s Aughnasheelin, also advanced to the semi-finals following with a one point over Mohill’s second team, their reward for that success will be a semi-final meeting with Carrigallen.
