There is a big derby this weekend in the Allianz national football league division 1 as Monaghan and Cavan prepare to meet in Castleblayney at 2pm on Sunday.
The Farney side will enter the game on the back of a win over last years beaten All Ireland finalists Mayo in McHale Park in Castlebar last Saturday night, While Cavan were defeated by the All Ireland champions Dublin in Kingspan Breffini Park.
Mattie McGleenan is in his first year in charge of the Breffini County and his side took to field last Sunday in front of a 16,231 strong crowd against the Dubs Unfortunetly the visitors prevailed by 0-18 to 0-11 after leading by 0-10 to 0-07 at the halftime break. But it was a performance that both management and players would have taken a lot of confidence from something that selector Finbar O’Reilly would have eluded to when he spoke to our reporter Sean Mc Caffrey.
There was better for fortune for Malachy ORourkes Monaghan side as the Farney army began their third successive Division One National football league campaign with a brilliant 1-11 to 0-12 win over their Connacht Rivals. Darren Hughes got the goal for the Farney side at the start of the second half while Sharpshooter Conor McManus kicked six points to help them on their way to victory at the start of their third straight season in the top tier of the competition.
A result which give them 2 valuable points, something that pleased selector Colin Mc Aree when he spoke to our reporter Sean Mc Caffrey.
Elsewhere in Division one tonight, Dublin face Tyrone in Croke Park and Kerry play Mayo in Austin Stacks Park at 7pm. And tomorrow Roscommon are up against Donegal in Doctor Hyde Park at 2.30pm.
