Former Irish boxing coach Billy Walsh has been named the International Boxing Association (AIBA) world coach of the year.
The Wexford native who now coaches Team USA guided the US to three medals during the Olympic Games.
Nico Hernandez secured the US men’s first boxing medal (bronze) since 2008 with Billy in his corner, while he also oversaw a gold medal for Claressa Shields and a silver for Shakur Stevenson.

It no surprise to see Billy do so well in the States as he was a key figure in the Irish set-up, and was part of the country’s most successful ever Olympics in boxing at London 2012.
However, Walsh subsequently left his role as Irish boxing’s high performance chief in the months leading up to Rio 2016.
