SIPTU says the government will have to designate as public service obligations a number of bus routes through the Shannonside region.
The union is against any plans by the company to outsource Expressway services, which they say would lead to private operators not taking on loss making routes serving rural Ireland.
These include services to Ballina and Westport and from Athlone to Knock, through county Roscommon; routes from Longford to Cavan and Enniskillen; services to and from Mullingar and Longford, through to Carrick on Shannon and Boyle.
Over the weekend, the NBRU which represents a section of drivers at Bus Eireann stated that some routes would come up for discussion and in the spirit of compromise, trade unions may have to accept some bitter medicine.
Willie Noone Transport Division Organiser with SIPTU says his union would be opposed to the loss of any rural services; he argues that the government must honour their commitment to protecting rural Ireland and subsidise key transport links in rural towns.
