Panic buying reported ahead of bad weather conditions

The arrival of the so-called ‘Beast from the East’ cold snap has sparked panic buying of basic food items like bread and milk.

Shelves were left empty in some shops yesterday.

Last night saw sub zero temperatures nationwide, and a Status Orange weather snow-ice warning comes into effect for many eastern counties this afternoon.

The worst of weather’s not due until tomorrow and Thursday as Storm Emma approaches, bringing blizzard conditions.

Met Eireann has issued a Snow-ice Warning for Kilkenny, Longford, Wexford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford.

Scattered snow showers later Tuesday and Tuesday night will lead to accumulations of up to 3 cm in some parts by Wednesday morning. Widespread frost and icy conditions also.
Updates to follow. Please see Weather Advisory.
