Preparatory work is to begin on Church Street in Athlone next Monday to prepare for the introduction of the one-way traffic system.
The works, which will be done overnight from 7pm to 4.30am, will concentrate on storm-water drainage and take six weeks to complete.
It’s hoped the main work will start in January once a contractor has been appointed.
Athlone Municipal District said that the working hours will be reviewed in light of the impact on residents and businesses nearby and that every effort will be made to minimise noise.
According to district manager Pat Keating tenders are currently being assessed and a main contractor should be appointed soon.
He said it’s hoped that this initial work will cause minimum disruption.
