Westmeath immigrants spokesperson says people haven’t faith to report abuse

The Chairman of the Westmeath Immigrants Network says many people don’t report racial abuse in Ireland because they don’t feel they’d be taken seriously.

Rashid Butt who has lived in Ireland since 2000 was commenting todays on reports of racist abuse in Athlone where families complained their children were being taunted and physically hurt because of the colour of their skin.

Speaking on Let’s Talk today Rashid Butt says he visits a family in Mullingar where the front garden is filled with rubbish thrown in by other people, and where the family has to keep their curtains drawn during the day to avoid further harassment.

He says he isn’t surprised to hear of the incidents in Athlone and believes a lot of people don’t even bother making complaints because they don’t have any faith in the system.
