The tender process has begun for the €1 million upgrade of the dining hall at Custume Barracks in Athlone.
Substantial funding was announced last year for the refurbishment of the historic building but, despite an indication work would start early in 2017, it’s only now been placed on the procurement website eTenders.
The works include the fully stripping of the existing kitchen and dining area and the provision of a new commercial kitchen.
As well as building an extension, the existing structure would be upgraded, while it would be vacated for the duration of the works.
Athlone mayor Aengus O’Rourke is welcoming the news.
