Contactors will move on site this morning as the next stage of the €3-million plan to remodel Church Street in Athlone begins.
John Craddock Ltd, from Kildare, will begin the process of making the street permanently one-way from today in works that are set to take in total up to eight months to complete.
A number of traffic restrictions are set to be implemented, including diverting traffic on to the Strand to allow sections of work to be carried out from next week, with vehicles and pedestrians allowed continue their progress.
More significant traffic restrictions are set to come into force by the middle of March at the junction of Griffith Street with Dublin Gate Street,
Church Street went one-way on February 15, with a mixed reaction to the plan.
Pat Keating, the district manager of Athlone Municipal District, says that while there have been issues, overall they are happy with the traffic flow down Church street so far.
