Work on providing flood defences in the Quay area of Athlone town should begin sometime in January after crews finish in the Iona Park area.
That’s the hope of Athlone Municipal District which is working on planning permission for the various areas around the town earmarked for the safety measures.
A total of €5 million euro has bene set aside by the OPW for the Athlone defences and the first crews moved on site at Iona Park in November of 2017.
Seven other areas still have to be tackled over the next year but District Manager Pat Keating says if things run smoothly he’s hoping the works should be finished in 2019.
He says they are hoping to move crews from Iona Park onto The Quay and then to the Strand area, but that depends on not encountering any problems in the planning process.
