A proposal contained in a leaked document to centralise all maternity services in the Shannonside region in Tullamore has been dismissed by a local Fine Gael TD.
Concerns remain for the future of Portlaoise Hospital’s emergency department, with a leaked report suggesting that if the hospital is downgraded by the HSE, its maternity services could be moved to a new site on the same campus of the current Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.
The Leinster Express newspaper also reports that any decision to move services to Offaly would also put pressure on the maternity units at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe and the Midlands Regional hospital in Mullingar to follow suit.
