Athlone man who swam the Shannon hopes to write guide to navigating the river

Athlone man Paddy McDonnell hopes to write a guide to navigating the Shannon after his epic swim which finished in Limerick in recent days.

Paddy who is originally from Coosan began a record swim of the entire Shannon on the 24th of last month and finished in Limerick on last Saturday.

He is the first Irishman to swim the length of the river after Dean Hall from the US achieved the feat last year.

Paddy says some areas like Lough Allen can be very tough and dangerous if the weather conditions aren’t right, but he says he hopes his experience can help others who want to swim or even canoe stretches of the waterway…
